About the Vatva cluster
Vatva’s GIDC estate was set up in 1968 on about 527 hectares across four phases, on the southern edge of Ahmedabad. It is one of the oldest and largest small and medium industry estates in Gujarat, with more than 2,500 industrial units of all kinds inside it, of which roughly 600 were chemical units when TERI mapped the Ahmedabad cluster in 2019 and 2020.
About four in five of those chemical units make dyes or dye intermediates, which makes Vatva the densest dyestuff job-work bench in north Gujarat, with pigments, fine chemicals, pharmaceutical intermediates and other organic and inorganic chemistry filling the rest. Scale per unit is small: this is a cluster of hundred-kilogram and single-tonne campaigns rather than tanker loads.
Its shared chemical infrastructure is unusually advanced. The Green Environment Services co-operative runs a 35 million litre a day effluent plant commissioned in 1998, a multiple-effect evaporator from 2014, three spray dryers, a Fenton catalytic oxidation stage running since December 2021, and a spent-acid recovery facility handling 1,000 tonnes a day that takes aluminium chloride residues from member units and puts them back to work.
What to check before you send an enquiry
The questions our desk puts to a unit before it qualifies an enquiry for Vatva. A listing answers most of them; the trial batch answers the rest.
- Consent to operate naming your process. Vatva is a critically polluted area, scoring 70.94 on the CPCB index in 2018, and the conditions attached to the November 2016 lifting of the moratorium still govern expansions and changes in product mix.
- Membership of the Green Environment Services effluent scheme, which serves several hundred registered member units, and the discharge limits your campaign would have to sit inside.
- Whether your spent acid or high-salt stream can go to the estate’s spent-acid or evaporation facilities, because a stream those cannot take becomes a disposal cost nobody quoted for.
- Vessel list by material of construction and working volume. Vatva plants are small, so confirm the batch size is real rather than a nominal vessel capacity.
- Distance and cost to a port if your product is exported, since Vatva is the most inland of the Gujarat chemical clusters and road freight to a coast is a real line in the quotation.
Nearby clusters and what runs here
Vatva sits inside Ahmedabad, with Naroda and Odhav as its sister estates in the same dyestuff cluster and the airport roughly a quarter of an hour away, which makes it the easiest of these clusters to visit and audit. Ankleshwar and Panoli are about three hours south for heavier chemistry and better port access. Blending, filtration, drying, crystallisation and milling are all well represented.

Common questions
- What is Vatva known for manufacturing?
- Dyes and dye intermediates, overwhelmingly. Around 80 per cent of the chemical units in the Ahmedabad cluster that Vatva anchors make dyes or intermediates, with pigments, fine chemicals, pharmaceutical intermediates and other organic and inorganic chemistry making up the rest. Campaign sizes are small, which suits development and speciality work.
- What effluent infrastructure does Vatva have?
- A co-operative called Green Environment Services runs a 35 million litre a day common effluent plant commissioned in 1998, extended with a multiple-effect evaporator in 2014, three spray dryers, and a Fenton catalytic oxidation stage in operation since December 2021 for hard chemical oxygen demand. Treated effluent leaves through a closed pipeline shared with the neighbouring estates.
- Can spent acid be handled in Vatva?
- Yes, and it is one of the cluster’s genuine advantages. A spent-acid management facility handling about 1,000 tonnes a day has operated since 2009, taking spent aluminium chloride from member units and reusing it as a clarification aid in effluent treatment. For sulphonation and Friedel-Crafts chemistry that changes the disposal arithmetic.
- Is Vatva a good choice if my product is exported?
- It is the weakest of the Gujarat chemical clusters on port access, because it sits inside Ahmedabad rather than on the coastal corridor. For export-heavy work, Ankleshwar, Panoli or Dahej will usually cost less in freight. Vatva earns its place on dyestuff depth, small-batch flexibility and being easy to reach and audit.
