Textile chemicals are a large, fast-moving toll manufacturing market because the product range is wide, margins are thin and proximity to the textile hubs of Surat, Ahmedabad, Bhiwandi and Tiruppur matters. Sizing agents, softeners, wetting agents, levelling and dispersing agents, dye-fixing agents, scouring and finishing chemicals are made on job work in the estates that neighbour the mills.
The chemistry is mostly surfactant and polymer work — sulfonation and sulfation, esterification, amidation, quaternisation and ethoxylation — followed by a great deal of blending and dilution to market grades.
