Vapi’s GIDC estate in Valsad district started in 1967 and is a declared chemical estate, developed across three phases. TERI’s 2022 profile for the Bureau of Energy Efficiency counted more than 300 chemical manufacturing units of which about 277 were operating, which is the most recent and most carefully drawn count published for any Gujarat chemical cluster.

The chemistry leans hard towards colour. By unit count the same study put dyes and pigments at 46 per cent, other chemicals at 36 per cent and pharmaceutical and API work at 18 per cent; by tonnage dyes and pigments account for about 54 per cent of roughly 621,000 tonnes a year.
