What spray drying on job work involves
Spray drying converts a pumpable feed into a dry powder in one step, and the dryers are expensive, tall and specific enough that most products are spray-dried on job work. Detergent and cleaning powders, dye and pigment preparations, ceramic and catalyst powders, food and nutraceutical ingredients and some pharmaceutical intermediates all reach the market this way.
The dryer is characterised by its evaporation capacity in kilograms of water per hour, its atomiser — rotary wheel or pressure nozzle — and its collection system of cyclones and bag filters. Together with inlet and outlet temperatures these fix the particle size, the bulk density and the moisture of the powder, so a trial run on the actual dryer is the only honest way to set a specification.
