What blending on job work involves
Blending is the most widely bought unit operation in toll manufacturing (job work) because so many finished chemical products are combinations rather than syntheses: a textile softener from an emulsion base, a water-treatment formulation from a coagulant and an inhibitor, a paint additive pack, a personal-care surfactant blend. The client supplies the recipe and usually the raw materials; the plant supplies mixing capacity, weighing, quality release and packing.
The equipment varies with the product. Powders run on ribbon blenders, plough-share and paddle mixers or drum tumblers; liquids on jacketed agitated vessels, in-line static mixers or high-shear rotor–stator heads for emulsions and dispersions. Batch sizes run from a few hundred kilograms to several tonnes, and the value of a good toll blender is homogeneity proven by test, not by the look of the batch.
What to check before you send an enquiry

- Mixer type and working volume matched to your product — a ribbon blender for a free-flowing powder, a plough mixer for cohesive or damp material, a high-shear head for an emulsion.
- Homogeneity evidence: sampling plan, the assay or coefficient-of-variation result on the trial batch, and how long the plant blends to reach it.
- Cross-contamination control: cleaning procedure between products, dedicated lines for colours or fragrances, and whether allergen or potent materials are handled on the same equipment.
- Dust and vapour control for the operator and the neighbourhood: extraction, bag filters, closed charging for solvents.
- Weighing accuracy and batch records — calibrated scales, a signed record per batch, retained samples.
