Toll manufacturing for pharma intermediates
Pharmaceutical intermediates are made on toll manufacturing (job work) at every scale in India, from the early steps of a route run in a multi-purpose plant to the penultimate intermediate made under GMP for a regulated market. The client owns the route and the analytical methods; the plant owns the reactors, the utilities and the discipline to run the same batch the same way every time and write it down.
What distinguishes pharma work is documentation and control rather than equipment: batch manufacturing records, certificates of analysis against the client’s specification, change control on raw materials and procedures, deviation handling, and a plant that welcomes the client’s auditor. Solvent recovery and hazardous-waste routes matter too, because the chemistry is solvent-heavy.
What to check before you send an enquiry
The questions our desk puts to a unit before it qualifies an enquiry for Pharma intermediates. A listing answers most of them; the trial batch answers the rest.
- Documentation standard: batch records, certificates of analysis, retained samples, and whether the plant has been audited by pharma customers before.
- GMP status where your step needs it — a WHO-GMP or comparable certificate covering the relevant block, not the site in general.
- Analytical capability on site for in-process control and release: HPLC, GC, KF, and method transfer experience.
- Change control and deviation handling the plant actually follows, with an example the desk can review.
- Solvent recovery and hazardous-waste disposal through authorised facilities, with manifests.
Where the capacity is
Pharma intermediate capacity is densest around Hyderabad in Pashamylaram and Jeedimetla, at JN Pharma City near Visakhapatnam, and in Gujarat’s Ankleshwar and Panoli estates; Tarapur and Lote Parshuram serve Maharashtra’s API makers.
