What hydrogenation on job work involves
Hydrogenation is one of the most specialised unit operations bought as toll manufacturing, because few plants can offer it. The step needs a pressure autoclave, a hydrogen supply under a storage licence, catalyst handling procedures and operators who have done it before. Clients with an occasional hydrogenation in an otherwise ordinary process buy the step rather than build for it.
Typical work is catalytic reduction over palladium on carbon, Raney nickel or platinum catalysts at pressures from a few bar to well above twenty, in autoclaves from 250 litres to several KL. Magnetically driven agitators avoid seal leaks; catalyst is filtered off closed and either recovered or returned. The economics turn on catalyst loading, cycle time and how cleanly the plant recovers precious metal.
What to check before you send an enquiry

- Autoclave rating and volume: design pressure and temperature, material of construction, and magnetic drive or a demonstrated seal system.

- Catalyst handling: pyrophoric catalyst procedures, closed filtration, and an agreed basis for precious-metal accounting and return.
- Hazard-class experience: high-pressure hydrogenation listed in the plant’s consent to operate, and an emergency plan the plant can show you.
- Downstream train on the same site — filtration, distillation or crystallisation — so the reduced product does not travel between steps.
