Toll manufacturing for paints & coatings
The paints and coatings industry buys toll manufacturing (job work) for the materials that go into paint rather than the paint itself: alkyd, polyester and acrylic resins, dispersing and wetting additives, driers and catalysts, and specialty solvents and diluents. Seasonal demand and the number of grades make it practical to contract out cooks and blends rather than hold capacity for each.
The equipment is resin kettles with fractionating columns for polyester and alkyd cooks, high-torque blending vessels for viscous intermediates, and solvent handling under flameproof conditions. Colour, viscosity, acid value and solids are the release parameters, and because coatings are judged by eye, colour consistency between batches is usually the specification that decides a supplier.
