What chlorination on job work involves
Chlorination is bought as toll manufacturing because chlorine is a licensed, hazardous gas that most plants prefer not to store. Units that do handle it — from tonners under a gas licence, with caustic scrubbers and hydrochloric-acid recovery — take chlorination steps for agrochemical intermediates, pharma intermediates and dye intermediates on a job-work basis, returning the chlorinated product or carrying it into the next step.
The reactors are glass-lined or PTFE-lined because chlorine and the hydrogen chloride it produces attack steel, and the off-gas train is as important as the vessel: a two-stage scrubber, an HCl absorber where the acid is worth recovering, and continuous monitoring of the stack. Photochemical and thermal side-chain chlorinations add lamps or high-temperature service to the same picture.
